A new nonprofit aims to help mothers-to-be who are hooked on opioids, and their babies.

Dr. William Johnstone and others spent 18 months planning the nonprofit corporation Tides Inc. They’re now looking for funding help and hope to start serving patients in coming months.

“It’s been a lot of talk about the opioid problem,” Johnstone said. “It’s time for action.”

Dr. William Johnstone is a Southern Pines native who came to Wilmington in 2013 to work in the Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Concerns for pregnant patients coping with what he calls “opioid dependency disorder” led to his spare-time mission.
